Understanding Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Osgood-Schlatter is a common condition that affects adolescents during periods of rapid growth.

It is a type of knee pain caused by inflammation of the area just below the kneecap where the tendon from the kneecap attaches to the shinbone (tibia). This condition is especially prevalent among active young people who participate in sports that involve running, jumping, and quick changes in direction, such as football, basketball, or gymnastics.

Causes and Symptoms

Osgood-Schlatter disease occurs when repeated stress on the knee from activities like running or jumping causes the tendon to pull on the growth plate at the top of the shinbone. This can result in inflammation, pain, and the development of a bony lump at the site.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain and tenderness at the bump below the kneecap.
  • Swelling around the knee.
  • Increased pain during physical activity, which improves with rest.
  • Tightness in the surrounding muscles, such as the quadriceps and hamstrings.

Treatment

For many, Osgood-Schlatter disease improves over time with the cessation of growth spurts. However, there are several strategies to manage symptoms and support recovery:

Self Management of Osgoods-Schlatter disease:

Rest and Activity Modification

Rest and Activity Modification

Rest and Activity Modification

  • Avoid activities that exacerbate knee pain.
  • Incorporate low-impact exercises, such as swimming or cycling, to maintain fitness without stressing the knees.

Stretching and Strengthening:

Rest and Activity Modification

Rest and Activity Modification

  • Stretching the quadriceps and hamstrings can reduce tension on the knee.
  • Strengthening the muscles around the knee can improve stability and reduce stress on the tendon.

Pain Management:

Rest and Activity Modification

Pain Management:

  • Apply ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes after activity to reduce inflammation.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relief, such as ibuprofen, as directed by a healthcare professional.

When to seek professional help

While self-management can be effective for many, professional intervention may be necessary if:

  • Pain persists despite rest and activity modification.
  • Symptoms interfere with daily activities or sports participation.
  • There is significant swelling or an inability to bear weight on the affected leg.
